I will outline ideas pioneered by Donaldson and Yau to obtain Ricci flat Kahler metrics numerically. We extend this to hermitian Yang-Mills connections on stable vector bundles. We investigate the accuracy of the approach in the case of quintic Calabi-Yau 3-folds, and give an overview/preview of what can be computed with this method.
